Your Health, Your Plan

Every Plan G covers the same benefits. Every Plan N covers the same benefits. But your health conditions determine which plan letter gives you the best value — and which carrier qualities matter most.

Why your health changes the math

Medigap plans are standardized — a Plan G from one carrier covers the exact same benefits as a Plan G from another. So why does your health matter?

Because the Plan G vs. Plan N decision depends entirely on how you use healthcare. Plan N costs less per month but charges copays per visit. If you see doctors frequently, those copays add up and Plan G becomes the better deal. If you're healthy and rarely visit, Plan N saves you money.

Your health also affects which carrier qualities matter most. If you have a chronic condition, you'll be on this plan for decades — carrier financial strength and rate stability matter more than today's premium.

Three factors that drive your choice

Visit frequency

How often you see doctors and specialists. More visits = more Plan N copays = Plan G may be cheaper overall.

Specialist needs

If you see out-of-network specialists who don't accept Medicare assignment, Plan G covers excess charges. Plan N does not.

Hospitalization risk

If you're at higher risk of hospitalization, both G and N cover the Part A deductible — but Plan N has a $50 ER copay.

Find your condition

Select your health situation for specific guidance on plan choice, carrier priorities, and what Medicare covers for your condition.

Don't forget about prescription drugs

Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you take medications, you'll need a separate Medicare Part D plan. You can enroll in Part D during the same enrollment period as your Medigap plan. Drug coverage varies significantly by plan and pharmacy — especially for specialty medications like insulin or biologics.
